(New Zealand 2013. Dir: Dana Rotberg. English and Māori. 96 mins.)

The UK premiere of WHITE LIES – based on a story by Witi Ihimaera – a film about the nature of identity: those who deny it and those who strive to protect it.

Paraiti (Whirimako Black) is a medicine woman. She is the healer and midwife of her people – she believes in life. But new laws are in force prohibiting unlicensed healers.  On a rare trip to the city, she isapproached by Maraea, the servant of the wealthy Rebecca, who seeks her knowledge and assistance to hide a secret which could destroy Rebecca’s position in European settler society. The three women become players in a head-on clash of beliefs, deception and ultimate salvation.

"Black is a towering screen presence who honours not only Rotberg’s and Ihimaera’s creation but also the centuries-old dignity and customs of her people." (Screen-Space)
